My former husband and I purchased our first Burmese cat, Charlie Brown, in 1965 from Fabulous Felines in New York City. Milan Greer, owner of Fabulous, author of the book Fabulous Felines and creator of the Tonkinese breed as we know it today, introduced me to the world of CFA Cat Shows. NYC shows were held at the old Armory on Park Avenue South. You could see as many as 40 Burmese in a cat show in those days and the males were huge. Greer would interview you as his potential customer, and then tell you which breed would fit your personality and life style. He chose the Burmese for us immediately, but we could only afford a Siamese at first and bought an Blue Apple head siamese girl. Milan insisted we save up for a Burmese, then $250. We lived above Fabulous Felines for six years and became good friend of Milan and his wife EJ. We were able to bring Charlie into our home Fall of '65. After seeing the big teddy bear males in the shows, we had decided on a male. Charlie turned out to be the runt of the litter. What he lacked in size, he made up for in personality and activity level though.

Charlie was with us for over18 years. Both of our children grew up under his watchful eye. Very few pictures of the children, especially when they were young, didn’t have Charlie somewhere in the picture. I have one picture holding my infant daughter, with my two year old leaning against my leg and Charlie draped around my neck like a scarf. That was also his favorite position when we were traveling between NYC and Connecticut in the car.
Scheriburm Cattery was established in 1990 and registered CFA in 1993. It was named after my first queen, Bonnie Brae Scheherazade, born April 1, 1989, in the home of the then 96 year old, Lydia Scott of Bonnie Brae Cattery in Shokan, New York pictured with me below. Lydia was well known in the cat world for over 50 years for her grand champion Abyssinians, Tonkinese, Siamese and Burmese. Scheri’s first breeding was to Bonnie Brae's Minka. In 1992 Scheri began traveling to Oshawa, Ontario, Canada to be bred to CCA Grand Champion, CFA Champion Kalmer’s Kristofer Kazoo of Sharom. Eventually Kris came to live in Connecticut with my family. He and Scheri continued to make beautiful babies until they both retired. Over the years, bloodlines from many major Traditional Catteries have been successfully introduced to improve the bloodlines. Being merely a hobby breeder, I have very few kittens available at any one time. If a person wishes to start their own breeding program, I am willing to mentor them, but they must agree to stay with Traditional, non HD (head defect) bloodlines only. If you wish to see kittens with the cranial defect a percentage of Contemporary kittens are born with, go to www.burmix.com.HD.html. Contemporary breeders may tell you that Traditional breeders have a high incident of Cardio Myopathy, NOT TRUE . Traditional Burmese do not have any higher incidents than the Contemporary or any other breed for that matter. In 19 years I have seen very few cases.

Scheriburm cats are known for their large, expressive eyes, beautiful coats, and loving dispositions. All kittens are hand raised with lots of love. Kittens may leave at about 3 to 4 months of age and weigh 2 to 3 lbs. They will have received atleast their 2nd inoculation and have had a physical exam by my veterinarian. A new pet owner must agree not to breed, but to have the kitten altered at 6 to 8 months of age, agree to not declaw or be allowed to roam outside. Retirees are sometimes available for adoption. The life expectancy of a Burmese cat is 15 to 20 years. My cats are Sable, Platinum, Blue and occasionally Champagne. Scheriburm Cattery has been a CFA registered cattery since 1993, and is a member of the CFA Burmese Breed Council and National Alliance of Burmese Breeders.
